A Rusty Truck Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day

Cable network runs The Godfather movies
back-to-back on Valentine’s Day for men like
Mikey Meatballs and Bobby-Balls-In-Hand,
who spent the day playing straight pool
and quoting lines in unison:
“You sonofabitch, do you know who I am?
I’m Moe Greene! I made my bones
when you were going out with cheerleaders.”

Last night, in bed, my husband warned me
that Valentine’s Day is a synthetic holiday
placed between Christmas and Easter
to boost the economy.

As Bobby’s about to run out the table,
I lean into the counter, trying to be original,
press my pen against a ninety-nine cent card
but am distracted, like Bobby is,
by Mikey belching the alphabet.

I salvage a crooked arrow piercing a lopsided heart,
but Bobby can’t take back a scratch.

HAPPY V.D.

one of Cupid’s arrows
had finally hit my heart &
I was in love & engaged
to be married.

Valentine’s Day night
I rode down from
Guerneville to Martinez
on my Panhead.

Suzy was just coming
out of the shower
when I reached her apartment
& we had some candy in bed
before we hopped on my bike
& headed for a steakhouse
in Alamo that was high class
& hadn’t taken too kindly to us
the first time we ate there.

the fucking polyester jumpsuit
white patent leather shoe wearing
rich cats & their blue-hair wives
shocked to see a hard-core biker
& his ol’ lady among them.

a veiled hint of don’t-fuck-
with-us comment to one of
the old fucks took care of that
after his blue-hair bitch made
a sarcastic comment about
the two of us
& we got “our table” anytime
I called for reservations from
then on after.

After a meal of steak & lobster I
pulled out my gift for Suzy from the inside
pocket of my leathers
& she pulled her gift for me
from her leathers & said, “Don’t
peek until I get back. I have to go
to the bathroom.”

I waited for what seemed like
an eternity before the waiter
brought me the bill & tucked
inside the folder was a note
from Suzy telling me we were
no longer a twosome & she’d
appreciate it if I didn’t call
or come by her apartment
in the future.

just like that
with no warning
she had pulled Cupid’s arrow
from my chest
ripping my heart out
in the process
& as I rode back to Guerneville
it began raining like a motherfucker.

Cupid & God pissing on my parade
as I rode hard & fast until I reached
The B & E Bowling Alley in Guerneville
where the ghost of Hank Williams
sang to the small audience of regulars
who disliked bowling & ignored him
as the sound of the bowlers & their
balls & clatter of pins virtually drowned
out the sounds of his voice & guitar coming
from his small tube amp
as they wondered among themselves
how high & hard they figured the Russian
river was running & if it would flood or
not before the year’s rainy season ended.

I sat alone at the end of the bar and opened
my Valentine’s present from Suzy & was not
surprised to see it was her engagement ring,
wondering why I hadn’t noticed she wasn’t
wearing it that night before she left me
high & dry at the steakhouse.

After I was Goddamn good & drunk I
walked down to the river which was running
high & hard & tossed in her ring
& the matching diamond necklace
I had brought her wondering how long it
would take them to reach Jenner-By-The-Sea
where the river emptied into the Pacific Ocean.

Not too many days later I was taking a piss when
the excruciating feeling of pain like razors
following my urine as it flowed from my dick
almost put me to my knees.

The love of my life had not only left me high
& dry at the steakhouse Valentine’s Day night
but she’d left me with a heavy dose of the clap
as well.

Cupid

Cupid, at long last, is dead
I shot that bastard in the head
you’ll find him lying in the street
crumpled wings and dirty feet
one less misery to mourn
one less day of his deceit
now, I’m free to be reborn
now, I’m free to be complete
don’t need that fucker in my bed
Cupid, at long last, is dead

The gift: A heart of stone

A gift?

Yes.

She unwrapped
the tissue paper of the tiny package.

In her hands she held a small, cold, and grey,
valentine shaped stone.

She looked up from the heart
she now held.

Looking at him she said: What?

He looked at her. My heart before I knew you, he said.
You’ve changed me.

And she felt the cold, stone heart warming
in her hands.

Saving Valentines in a Shoe Box

said
you always wanted a love poem
a v-day poem to hold–
always written
but never sent as
first drafts are not for love
but  on all days
you are my virgin
princess
the gypsy slowly
caressing soft curves
the ready to paint sunrise I see
when I leave for work
the strong legs wrapping
around my own searching
for my belt
you are my love the cool side
of the pillow when I dream
you have cast your shadow
on my heart and  it has become
permanent like a brautigan poem
that makes me smile
you are my blue-mist morning
wrapped in white indigo
the stillness on the morning
lake
you are the dust dancing
like confetti at the world series
you are the perfect strokes of monet
the color of  a zen dawn
the first angel sent
to that concrete rodeo
so many poems ago
a turned up
lover’s card
under
the gypsy moon
you are my
love poem
