when bob dylan played at walden pond and leon russel was the opening act by scot young

i have a new pond out back
past the barn
past the forgotten quotes
of  thoreau
beyond the  pile of rusted
& twisted

at the edge of a field of red clover
the water changes  from mocha
to clear depending
on the rain
and tadpoles grow legs before
our eyes and make their own way
at midnight deer and raccoon drink
white eyes glowing
the half august moon reflecting
the stars like a thousand
points of life

fireflies dance through the field
like the first concert where we held
up a bic lighter
clapped for encores
so many lifetimes ago
pretending we were part
of something bigger

but it was nothing like this
not even close
